I don't know if I agree with having your company in your headline. I have seen many people recommend putting words that describe you/your personal brand rather than tethering yourself to one position/title/company.

What worked really well for me is writing a recommendation for each people from whom I wanted one. I would say the majority of them reciprocated the favor with a nice recommendation.

Found your communication dynamics very valuable. I'm currently teaching two introductory college classes. Each one has half the students using blogs, the other half using wiki's. So far, I think the wiki's are more helpful for the students. But I didn't know about the aggregator application. That would certainly help me to monitor what the students are writing, and I think that it would make the experience more lattice-like for students because it would make it easier for them to monitor each other's postings

Chris, I just discovered your site, great stuff!
What are your thoughts on people just starting out or switching careers? I just graduated from business school and while I have experience in other industries, I want to do something different (which I have no experience in). How should someone in my situation position their summary for prospective employers? I've been learning all I can about social media, branding, marketing etc because those are areas I want to be eventually, but what are some tips for profile summaries that go beyond merely claiming that I have knowledge of these areas?

I'm currently working (hard) on rewriting my Linkedin profile. Your tips are very very useful. One question though : updating past experience every month.....past being past and done; do you suggest to write this experience by bits & pieces or simply to change a word so that your network see that you exist on a regular basis...

Chris,

Good to see you on LinkedIn. I have used this medium to generate a 7 figure revenue stream for my employer in the past twelve months and I have no idea why it isn't a higher priority for B2B marketers / sales people.

Also - I personally think that recommending people you do not know is tantamount to fraud.

I write about this a lot, and I have always been against the connect to everybody approach. LinkedIn is not Facebook after all... It isn't about friends its about connections, and there is a difference.

Something that I have found is that when you connect only to (say) decision makers in your target industries, then your update stream turns into a unique source of business intelligence.

If you connect to everybody it gets diluted, and turns into uninteresting mush about people you barely know.

Great article. I know linkin.com is very popular in the US. But i am not sure if it will come to China. Anyway, Facebook did not succeed in China. Hope that will change soon.
