Chris Brogan: When Pirates Board a New Ship

  • Jim "Genuine" Turner · 11 months ago
What no patch, and I thought Justin had a peg leg you guys needed som props! This is awesome news.
  • Joe · 11 months ago
This is the type of story that helps me explain the value of social media to people like my father (God bless him) who think services like Twitter are all about 'telling people you just went to the bathroom or ate a sandwich."

p.s. (Is it 'Brandy' or 'Brandie'?).

    Thanks Chris
  • Leslie Poston · 11 months ago
    I LOVE IT! :)
  • Adam Singer · 11 months ago
You guys love the pirate ship analogy so much...

Okay I'll admit, it is a pretty good analogy and simultaneously funny. Nicely done.
  • Scott Mahler-Datex Media · 11 months ago
What a great example of the power social media holds in business. It has always been my belief that social media is about networking and meeting people that can help you and vice-versa. That help can be in getting you new business, meeting people in your field of work or getting to take a tour of a pirate ship.
  • Michael VanDervort · 11 months ago
    Chris,

If you want all the pirates you can handle, you should check out Gasparilla in Tampa. The festival starts January 24. http://www.gasparillapiratefest.com/
  • JackHumphrey · 11 months ago
Brilliant! I was just talking last night to Warren Whitlock and Ben Mack (in Vegas) about "being present." Not sure people have caught on just what that means in terms of social media yet, but this is a perfect example!

Wish you would have written this yesterday so I could have pointed it out on the show and looked a lot smarter! :)
  • Jeb Dickerson · 11 months ago
How will you be using this pic to advance the company?
  • --Deb · 11 months ago
How great a picture is that??? Love it!
  • Sonny Gill · 11 months ago
I'm just waiting til you guys get an interview with Johnny Depp and ask him what it means to be a pirate ;)

Fantastic work though by Brandie for listening and actually caring about what you guys wanted to do, instead of immediately shunning idea. Being human instead of acting like just another person with a job. Great story.
  • Drew Beatty · 11 months ago
It's a pity you just shaved the beard - it would have made for a seriously badass looking pirate photo!
  • JP Holecka · 11 months ago
I am teaching a class on twitter for brand and business on the 15th. I am going to include this example. I think that your story will help illustrate why companies and brands should be at the very least monitoring the conversation.

    Neat stuff!

How many people on the sidewalk snapped pictures and wondered, "Who are those guys?"
  • geo · 11 months ago
yo chris - i think there is more to this social pirate ship metaphor then meets the eye chris - keep noodling the pirate ship aspect of social media social revolution - social pirate ship food for thought - emperor g-oh
  • Marla Schulman · 11 months ago
This photo is such an appropriate metaphor...."Ho Ho Ho Ho a pirate's life we lead..." isn't that what social media is all about? One small ship can still sail it in a vast sea!
  • iGoByDoc · 11 months ago
    Great photo Chris!

Brandie is great! Been tweeting with her for a while now, and she was very good to me and a buddy while in Vegas back in October! She is very "Human Aware" indeed!

Looking forward to seeing some more of the pictures!

    Doc - @iGoByDoc
  • Steve Sherlock · 11 months ago
Chris, great story. I can hardly wait to see the remainder of the photos!
  • Lois · 11 months ago
What a great story! I love the words "human aware." Marvelous connecting.
  • Rich Young · 11 months ago
Thanks for sharing, Chris. But with all due respect, I'm struggling to see what's so groundbreaking about getting on TI's ship for a few shots. What's the lesson learned here? Maybe that's a topic for a forthcoming post, just wondering what the goal is.
  • Chuynh · 11 months ago
Great demonstration of business communications at work. It took the right idea, people with vision and the right circumstance to pull off. On the surface alone, MGM as a company reinforces its brand with very little effort and expense, with a very gutsy decision by a couple of progressive decision makers. I'd be interested in the nuts and bolts of the actual sales pitch that transpired. It would make a good case study. I hope you decide to write it.
  • Man Overboard · 11 months ago
Nice way to cash in on the blog! I just got back from Vegas two weeks ago and I was thoroughly disappointed that the Ship was down for renovations and the show was canceled the entire week I was there.

I would have loved a chance to climb aboard!
  • MagsMac · 11 months ago
Great post Chris. I work at Schipul-The Web Marketing Company and our story is very important to us. We fiercely protect it but also work very hard to share it with others and invite people to be a part of it. It is really cool to see how much the Houston community had become an integral our story. We would not be the company we are if it wasn't for that.

I think your story is a great example of business communication and of companies inviting their publics to become a part of their story. I love that you got to be a pirate out of it :)
  • Gennaro @ Enduring Wanderlust · 11 months ago
When do you guys sail off for the shores of Somalia for some real treasure?
  • Napril1023 · 11 months ago
    Aargh!
  • David Spinks · 11 months ago
    Chris,

Social media allows you to connect to people on a more personal level. I feel as though I know many of the people I follow on twitter, including you Chris, on a more personal level even if they're not following me back. When you feel like you know someone personally, you feel more inclined to help that person if they need something. By connecting on social media, we are connecting as real people and this is a great example of how that connection contributes to helping each other in the offline world as well.

Brilliant, funny example of the power of Social Media!
  • Coffee Talkee · 11 months ago
I agree, this is a great analogy to explain how Twitter can be used. And I think my experiment was answered by Chris' blog post.

    Kudos!
  • Site O Rific · 11 months ago
Hmmm, maybe Twitter is good for something after all!
  • Julie Roads · 11 months ago
I love when you show us all how human you are - the fact that you begged, missed an email, suffered a dropping-out call and fretted...
This realness and humility is what keeps me coming back. (oh, and you're wicked smart...)
  • Susie Blackmon · 11 months ago
Great story and photo. Feel free to pirate my ship any time.
  • Brandie / @LuxorLV · 11 months ago
Chris - Glad I was able to help! The photo turned out great and I look forward to seeing the rest.

Justin - Kudos for the idea and the guts to ask.

Looking forward to seeing both of you when you're back in Vegas.
  • MizFit · 11 months ago
    shiver me timbers!
Does this mean you will be joining me on September 19th now?
It's my favorite day of the year ;)
  • zaellen · 11 months ago
Amazing Chris! I love it! Seems that it's all about courage and not being afraid of rejection. If you don't ask, you'll never know. Having a cool crazy idea, following through and not giving up and succeeding! What an empowering message! Thanks for this...
  • Deanna · 11 months ago
Jeb asked this before, but why? Was it just to see if you could, or was there a marketing objective to the photo? Or was proving that you could the marketing objective?
  • Doug Firebaugh · 11 months ago
Arrrrr! Social Media Communication at it's best once again ! Now THAT is persistence properly placed and put in the position for the powers to prove that Passion moves people! Don't ask me to say that again. Great post Chris-shows how this social media zone works when applied!
  • Shannon (@cajun_mama) · 11 months ago
Chris - How fun was that for you? I know you will always remember that "moment" of being on The Song. Things like this are so cool and that's why I love social media. You've been able to accomplish something that even travel writers haven't been able to do. You are a Rock Star!
  • Gary McElwain · 11 months ago
This is a great example of the power of the social networking media. I should of listened to Ed Dale 2 years ago when he first started raving about the power of Twitter.

I hope my ship hasn't sailed yet.

    Gary McElwain
  • Christy · 11 months ago
Can't believe people need to ask, "Why?" You had a dream and you followed through. The takeaway is that relationships make things happen and social networking builds relationships. Why does everything need to be groundbreaking? Why isn't the story cool in and of itself? I've been waiting to hear the outcome of your quest to go aboard the TI ship... glad to hear that you made it!
  • Rob Harris · 11 months ago
A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel sticking out of his zipper. The bartender says “did you know you have a steering wheel sticking out of your pants?” The pirate says “Arrr. It’s driven me nuts”
  • Deanna · 11 months ago
It's called Marketing Strategy (for Christy). If indeed the purpose was just to see the power of social media, then the objective was achieved (and of course it was fun and exciting to make it happen). For me, I found Chris' blog interesting because of tips that I can use to promote my own business and improve my blog, and info that I can share with clients. So, my question for the underlying strategy relates to my reason for connecting to Chris. If there is nothing deeper to it, the fact that he made it happen will certainly have me thinking broader when brainstorming in the future. At any rate, I'm sorry Chris hasn't chimed in, since the question has been asked twice. Cheers.
  • Colonel Tribune · 11 months ago
Great story, Chris. It looks like I may need an eyepatch soon.
  • chrisbrogan · 11 months ago
The pirate photo relates to The Beauty of Pirate Ships and Privateers - Backing Your Pirate Ships. It relates to a business strategy I've been pitching since last fall that I've used to build my company.

There are more pictures in the set all taken by Brian Solis.

How is this in any way groundbreaking? Hmm, I didn't say that it was. Is it different than how most businesses act on a given day? Test it out for yourself. Ask a business to go out of its way to do something where there's no obvious value back to them for doing it. See what you get for a response.

I think that social web-friendly companies are doing things that more traditional companies are not, and that these have ripple effects in their culture.
  • chrisbrogan · 11 months ago
@Deanna - I was traveling yesterday and slept today. Sorry I wasn't more prompt in my reply.
  • Deb Ng · 11 months ago
My six year old is jealous. Very jealous. Jealous as in "Mommy how come I never get to do anything cool like that?"

Great story about the power of Twitter and the need for businesses to be involved in social media. Argh!
  • Peter · 11 months ago
    Chris,
Great story and great example of the power of Twitter used properly. But - since you went through all the hard work of getting a picture not a lot of others will ever get, could you have at least looked a little better as pirates then social media tourists? ;-)

    Great Work!!
  • Deanna · 11 months ago
Chris, thanks so much. I just joined the community a few weeks ago, and didn't have the benefit of the earlier posts. So, not only was it brililant for it's own sake, it really is brilliant as a physcial, single image embodiment of your business philosophy or 'brand' per se. Also, kudos to you for respectfully explaining it to me. (e.g. for helping older folk who don't always get it but who want to get it and use it see the light clearly).
  • Shaine Mata · 11 months ago
I am in awe. Now I am wondering how many other bloggers will try this.

Still, this is one of those pics you have to frame and put up on your wall. Way to go, Chris.
