Chris, put the buttons in the sidebar, you will see readers definately go up over time as it makes it easier for your readers to subscribe. It's definately one of those things you want towards the top of your blog :)

Remember too, Chris, you can have your feed added at http://www.feedblitz.com/ so that people can get your updates to their email inboxes. Not everyone checks their readers or homepages as often.
