Chris Brogan: Still Cant Figure Out Technorati

  • Mark S. Luckie · 1 year ago
I don't get Technorati's system either, but other than site analytics its a great way to assure myself that people are reading my stuff.
  • Erica · 1 year ago
I don't get it at ALL. Though I'm much less significant than your blog, I can't even get my blog to show up in any of the searches. Somedays yes, others Nope. The whole technorati thing has eluded me completely.

Congrats for crossing this milestone!! I don't really know much about Technorati either and I find myself scratching my head very often when trying to understand the authority and ranking.

Sorry I don't have more knowledge.

i.e. There are likely others with a higher authority than you have that = same #s. Such as 2 blogs at 3020. (Hypothetically.) Blog A could be ranked 91 and Blog B could be ranked 92. Which is how you could be 97/77.

I might be wrong... just my best guess.

I thought you weren't the kinda guy who keeps score? Hmm.??

I'm just joshin' (do people still say that?). But seriously, congratulations on the good Technorati stats (couldn't help ya in explaining them tho) and for breaking the twitter 15k follower mark!

I read through their Authority FAQ. So they're still using the old model (# of inward links) Yahoo used to use to decide "authority" of a site before Google came along, which decided the better model was to weights each inward links by its own Authority instead. That means it's very easy to game Technorati's authority system by creating several blogs and link to your main blog. (Old SEO trick!)

On the side note, I noticed they index Twitter too! Doesn't that just make it even easier to artificially boost your Technorati Authority?

To be expected. Since your blog's rank is decided by a robot.
  • Pam Hawk · 1 year ago
    Well, uh... Ummm, hmmm.
    Oh. Ahhh, uhhh, Congratulations?
    :o)

I don't get it either. Everytime I click on my technocrati account it tells me that such user doesn't exist. I only "exist" if I repeat my click... And it's not that technocrati would have to search for much references for a new blog like mine...
  • Craig Klein · 1 year ago
Congratulations! Whether it matters or not, a lot of hard work went into it.
  • Todd Defren · 1 year ago
Congrats! I just recently made it into Technorati Top 5K (at least, I was #4,999 last I checked) and felt similarly discombobulated. No clue how it works.
  • Jim Lenahan · 1 year ago
Chris, congrats ... It may be a screwy system, but it still says something about you and your blog. We're just not exactly sure what. But something is better than nothing. Great seeing you at BlogWorld ...

This is something that Technorati will for sure need to straighten out. They should at least just add option to their drop down on the top blogs to sort by rank. I think sort by rank should be default if that is how they represent sites in their profile. Seems kind of like a big oversight for such a popular website.

hopefully us, your readers, who you provide insane value to helped ya get there. well earned ! =)

If I ever need to search the blogosphere, I use bloglines.com. Technorati just plain sucks to me.
  • jsinkeywest · 1 year ago
    That's awesome good for you.
The competition is played out and vulnerable.
  • Ari Herzog · 1 year ago
When you consider a Technorati-claimed splog (spam blog) can link to you and gives you a Technorati point, it's hard to gauge the validity of T-authority.
  • Kevin Cimring · 1 year ago
Also can't figure this out - never seems to respond to my pings, and generally not user friendly.
  • Dorion Carroll · 1 year ago
Chris, I found the problem and have fixed it. Your blog is currently listed as #79. Sorry for the inconvenience and welcome to the Technorati Top 100.
  • Melanie Nelson · 1 year ago
I have no idea, but I'm just really happy I'm not the only one who doesn't understand Technorati. I've hid my ignorance for a few years, but I'm ready to come out of the closet and say: I do not get it.

But congratulations on reaching a goal!
  • davefleet · 1 year ago
Congrats Chris. I'm afraid I don't know about the ranking question, though. Maybe it factors in total link numbers alongside authority?
  • David Sifry · 1 year ago
    Chris,

CONGRATULATIONS on making it to the top 100! I see you there as #90 right now:

Apologies for the delay in you showing up on the list, there was a bug in the system, but the folks over at Technorati took care of it. If I had your number, I'd call you up to shoot the breeze, but you can always call me at 415 846-0232, happy to chat and answer any questions you might have! :-)

    Dave

    P.S. Woo hoo! Congratulations!
