Great tips Chris - never even thought of the NSFW point, but then again when you don't work in an office, why would :-) Another point I have found is that balance posts with links (which people tend to retweet less - especially if they appear to be promotional) against those that do not have links.

Chris, do you notice any time of day differences in likelihood of retweet or reply activity?

How about: Be selective when Tweeting through Foursquare. There are times it works; if you're at a big event or a new restaurant and you want to add some brief commentary. But at McDonald's? No one cares.

I see retweeting in relation to what Jack Ma said (paraphrasing) on the Charlie Rose show. "If you think all of this information belongs to you your wrong. If you share knowledge from the framework of helping people solve real problems, then you'll become rich beyond belief" I think an altruistic approach is the best way to Win friends and influence people on Twitter. As a self-admitted, former Troll (weren't we all?) at one time I now see the intangible value in sharing the "wealth" via retweets.

You are right. I think some people simply retweet for the joy of retweeting. They may skim the title but they are posting more out of habit than any thing substantial.

These are some great tips. I actually adopted some of these methods early on but I'm still one to actually put in the work to edit down a tweet that I think is useful information that is worth sharing. One has to be quite limber to bend through the myriad of SEO and social media hoops these days but I suppose the benefits outweigh the work so its all well worth it.

Do you think is better not to use hashes than using them?.. i.e. if you use them your exposure is better, but it can be bad for re-tweets as you said before.

Most of my tweets are scheduled to go out every couple of hours and contain links to other people's posts that I find interesting. My blog posts are automatically fed to twitter using twitterfeed so that takes care of most of my self-promotion. I hop on twitter a couple of times a day to answer @ replies and DMs, retweeet current tweets I find useful and converse with a few people.

Just like you said I try to ensure that my tweets have enough space for it to be retweeted without major editing by potential retweeters. There are tweets that I see that I would love to retweet but when I try to shorten it and it's too long I just don't.

That's how I do it.
