Great summary, Chris. I think you covered all the tools needed to get started. I use most of them daily.

    I agree Erik!

Btw - wouldn´t this post do perfect for the Beirut Seminar?
  • Erik S-O Johansson · 2 months ago
    Let's do it! :-)

Chris, you continue to amaze me with your knowledge and the gift you have of sharing it. I truly hope the best for you....Thank you!

A nice full list Chris! Some items are familiar, some are new to me. Some I really should explore more (like del.icio.us). Thanks for sharing!

It's a great list, Chris, but you might want to mention one or two of the excellent tools to help you manage Twitter. I'm a huge fan of Snitter, for example.

I was listening to Perry Marshall interview a Joan Stewart and she analysed why Amazon created and succeeded with their recent Kindle launch and how us small folk could learn from them. She admitted that she had been reluctant to get to grips with social media and only did because she knew it was necessary. One of the interesting things she revealed about MySpace was that last August apparently one third of the people on the planet visited MySpace. It seemed a lot to me but it made me think that I must not dismiss it.

Very informative post, everything you have said is so true and there's plenty that I haven't thought about doing myself yet.

Will definitely implement some of these techniques though!

All great information, thanks! The one thing I've had frustration in as a "newbie" is that I hear so much about video etc. and plenty of sites in which to distribute it, but I can't find much advice on a very primal How-To about actually MAKING the videos when you aren't savvy in that particular department. Sure, knowing the software is a good start, but where can I find good info and tips about shooting and editing it?

http://freevlog.org is a great place to start. They have lots of wonderful resources, and it's made by brilliant people who are community-centric and then some.

    Any other references?

Very useful and informative, thanks Chris! I think I'm going to pass this along to my SM noob friends!

@Erica I belong to Shooting People. They have a US wing I think.
Their site is shooting people.com. I expect that in their resources they have information that may answer som eof your questions.

    Blip.tv also hosts audio.

    Hi Chris!

    Great post, (as usual..)

About rich media and audio hosting: Blip.tv offers audio free hosting too, I'm using it and it seems to work fine.

When you upload the file on blip.tv (http://blip.tv/file/post/):

1- choose your file by clicking on 'Choose File'
2- click on 'Add additional format' and make sure to select 'Portable (other)' when you are 'selecting a role' for your file.

A fine list for the distribution of said content - however, once you have that all in place - letting your audience re-connect with you is certainly a major part of new media.

Of course, I'm talking about http://www.mychingo.com which allows anyone to click and record MP3 audio comments using their microphone and a browser.

Great ideas there and many would work on a personal/individual level, too.

Another option to consider for a starter pack - a FREEMIUM account of SM2. Gives you analysis features for Sentiment, Demographics, Geographics, Trends, Themes, and Authority.

    Hi Chris!
    Great post!

Do you think that companies can create your own social networks to explore the relationship better?
  • Jeffrey Veffer · 11 months ago
Great post! I like the emphasis not only on "contributing" but on "listening." Need both sides for an informed discussion.

Absolutely fantastic blog. Hope others learn as much as I did reading this.
