I'm a Gen Y'er and have several years of experience working with companies who target Gen Y specifically through social media. While I think it's important for every CEO to be listening to Gen Y on social media, I don't know that CEO's are necessarily the best spokespeople for the company. Gen Y learns so much through peers, and I've found that young representatives who are themselves in Gen Y (or at the latter end of Gen X) are good people to connect with the generation.

Since many CEOs (especially for small companies) are pretty young these days, the CEO might be the right person to reach out. But don't discount other people in the organization because this generation does not communicate like Gen X or the Boomers.

Again, great interview Chris, and nice to learn something from Mike today!

Re: Interview with Mike Myatt

Great interview, Chris. There are still many CEOs who believe Personal Branding is some sort of fad that will one day go away then they can turn back to their corporate traditions, boardrooms and shareholders. Rather than embrace it, they prefer to stick their necks in the sand which is regretful when one thinks of the possibilities. Mike Myatt is an excellent example of how to take advantage of this opportunity but I think they might wake up when it's too late..

Re: Interview with Mike Myatt

Chris,

What Mike says about the first mover advantage resonates with me. I'm convinced that the next five years will see more changes in marketing and communications than the last fifty, and that the first mover advantage, especially for new brands, is immense.

-- Axle Davids
@1day1brand

Re: Interview with Mike Myatt

I particularly like MIke's statement: "SM gives a CEO the opportunity to engender trust and confidence through genuine public interaction in a way that can meaningfully reach more people than is possible through any other medium."

If the foundation of business is relationships, why wouldn't we embrace the best tools in order to facilitate relationship building and nurturing?

Re: Interview with Mike Myatt

Good stuff here...I especially appreciated Mike's acknowledgment that "one size does not fit all." BTW... similar name as your guest but... Mike Hyatt (CEO of Thomas Nelson) had a great post this week on "5 Ways Your Company Can Benefit from Twitter," taken from his vantage point as a CEO. http://michaelhyatt.com/200...

Also... Dan Cathy, President of Chick-Fil-A has shown some good use of Twitter and blogging lately. http://www.dantcathy.com/ They just put on a big leadership event in Orlando and from what I saw, they used social media a great deal leading up to and within it.

Re: Interview with Mike Myatt

Interesting interview Chris, and some really good answers there Mike. Relevant to me, as I'm working with some European company directors, helping them with social media.

The biggest challenge I'm finding is moving these guy's mindsets away from seeking an instant return in terms of sales or bottom line. Their focus on "How fast will we make money from this?" is so ingrained in everything that they do.

I hope you won't be offended Mike, but I had to read some of your answers several times to understand the point. They were pretty heavy on the jargon, at least for this simple European.
