I would add a couple "musts" when starting your blog: learn how to set your permalinks so they have the names of your articles in them and make sure you know about headline usage. These things help you get found in search engines a great deal and if you do it from the beginning it will make your blog that much better when you get going.

This is a great suggestion. Many people ran into this problem without
solution. learning tracks takes a little difficult at first, but if they
persist and learn from examples, it is easy to find master. It is much
like fixing a broken appliance.

Trying something new is definitely going to be the number 1 priority every blogger should have. Its just not enough to produce great content anymore. The blogosphere is just too busy to notice your great content unless you proactively market your blog

I hate to be a stick in the mud, and be seen as negative, but I'll give it a go here. I don't agree! See now I'm in trouble, always the contrarian. See I think we have moved past Blogs as a relevant way to get a business started in Social Media. Now that is, if this is what we are talking about here, business finding their way in the social media space. I have found that over the last year or so, we, the human web 2.0er's, do not want to take the time to read long and drawn out blogs to get information. As we move forward with our Electro Social experience and move even further into the Mobile space, we just do not take the time anymore. We've only done it to ourselves. Time is the only commodity that we can't replace, so we look for ways to use less of it to achieve the same result. Am I wrong?? I also think Twitter is turned into a Sociocelebrity soup of jibber jabber, and have rarely found anything really useful to the business at hand. As a business medium, I have found only FB, heaven forbid, to be the most useful way to communicate business concepts in the Social Media Space. Just my take.. Could go on and on...

I might add that you should take a creative writing course and don't be a stupid nubby when getting started. At least pick up a few books or tips and tricks off the web on twitter and facebook basics so that you are not just winging it to start. I think there are many people that are just getting started and we need more basics to get folks comfortable to get engaged. Thank you for this clear step approach.

Don’t worry as much about the features, although certain companies make blogging platforms that go above and beyond simple content publishing. Don’t focus hard on the add-ons and whizbangs, but do know that a bare bones, out of the box blog is about as appealing as two slices of bread with a piece of bologna on it.

Chris - Social media is like chivalry. Flashback a couple of centuries, and visions of gallant knights come to the forefront. Their chivalrous methods won (or broke) hearts of damsels - and based on their credo they these knights either made a name for themselves - or got branded as damned.

We're a few centuries forward now - but the rules of the game are still the same. And you pretty much succinctly summed them up. I did a revisit of some of these rules on my own blog today - Social Media Notebook, and found that these core principles are still at the heart of any successful social media start.
