Chris Brogan: How Will We Move This Forward?

  • Leslie Madsen-Brooks · 3 years ago
Another great post, Chris, but I'm bristling a bit at your casual reference to "moms" as people who aren't tech savvy. Can you find another term that isn't quite so dismissive of such a large and diverse group of people?

Otherwise, keep up the good work!

Good point. I would've said grandmoms, but most of our grandparents are dead. I'll have to think on that. It's the same phrasing Mena Trott from Six Apart uses, and I followed her lead.

    Thanks.

    Chris,

Great Post. I will have a much better comment when I get my laptop up and running. I already fried my wireless router over here in Germany. Trying to find an electronincs store open on Sunday.

I can't wait to join the conversation.

I don't have all the answers but I thought I'd let you know the two specific notes I made while reading this post....

    1. Start producing a multi-media how-to series. For example blog posts that are step-by-step on how to navigate the blog, a post on how to consume a podcast, a podcast about how-to produce an audio clip for the show, a video about how-to navigate the blog....these are only 5 mins into the thought process but this was my initial thought. I would link to these how-to posts/podcasts/videos to enable newbies to learn and start consuming. (no jargon included)

    2. My second thought came from your question on what we are offering ie entertainment, value etc.. and so on that note I will be pursuing some interviews to make the show both more informational and valuable.

These small steps aren't going to change the world of new media but at a grassroots level I hope they will improve the show and thus increase listeners/viewers and readers. Lots of small steps by the media producers can and will result in a giant leap forward for new media (sorry about the sucky Neil Armstrong-esque-ness of that!)

Sounds like you have a strong sense of marketing, knowing your core customers and understanding your customer wants. Keep up the good work!!!!!

The old rules of sales, marketing, and profit still apply. Find a need, fill the need, and people will gladly pay money for that need to be filled. Look at what Barry Schwartz is saying about the paradox of choice. With so much choice, people are paralyzed, unable to make decisions and feeling bad about the decisions they've made because they're operating under the premise that with so much choice, any result that's less than perfect must somehow be their fault.

Blogs, podcasts, and video podcasts have the potential to fill the roles of trusted advisor, friend, and mentor. If we can be the most entertaining and the most compelling and the most informative in what we do, people will listen. When we have products or services to recommend, like graduate student loans from the Student Loan Network, people will listen based on trust.

The market is there. It's ready. We need to be so compelling that people will actively seek us out based on word of mouth.

Good points about the paralysis of choice, Senor Penn...

I was talking with some small business owners in Bellevue last night, a borough in Pittsburgh wehere we film a lot of Something to Be Desired. They were wondering what more they can do to create a buzz around their neighborhood that brings more people in to experience their various destinations -- a superb high-end restaurant, a Euro-style nightclub, a singular coffee shop and a one-of-a-kind thrift store, among others.

The resultant conversation sparked an idea in my head and I now believe I have the template for the future of community-building media communications in my mind. I'm excited to talk about it with the next round of conversationalists and see where we can take it.

The web: it's not just for corporations anymore.
