Gatekeeper - The Music Industry (Geffen, Atlantic, Sony)
Gatejumper - Digital Technology (Napster, Bittorrent, MySPace)

    Gatekeeper - NBC Television
Gatejumper - Ask A Ninja, Tiki Bar, TV, French Maid TV

Question - definition of gatejumper is distruptive to the status quo, not just a newer/brighter/whiter/shinier version of something that already exists (think the mobile phone carriers - just 'cause you are new doesnt make you special)??

First, I agree with G. Wayne Clayton mostly, except I think Mapquest would be considered the GateJumper of any regular map you'd buy at a gas station and then Google Maps would be the next GateJumper. This brings up another great point: what does it take for a GateJumper to be GateJumped?

Beyond that, I don't think ABC/CBS/NBC were replaced by Youtube or Blip.tv. Those two examples, to me, seem to be almost in a league of their own. I would say something like Revision3 is truly the GateJumper to ABC/CBS/NBC.

The gatejumpers would be lost without the gatekeepers. The gatekeepers define the industry.

Once new territory is discovered, the gatejumpers stake it out and a new set of boundaries are immediately drawn and defended.

Thus the old gatejumpers become the new gatekeepers.

    (Lather, rinse, repeat.)

I totally agree on NYTimes vs. Huffington Post. In fact, I wrote a whole post about this a few weeks ago, complete with Quantcast data.

I'd say Craigslist has gate-jumped the newspaper classified ads, rather than the yellow pages. You might instead say:

    Gatekeeper: Yellow Pages
    Gatejumper: Search engines

Because that's what I do, anyway -- rather than turning to the Yellow Pages for a contractor or landscaper or plumber, I'm likely to just go to Google and type in "plumber portland oregon," perhaps including my zip code for good measure.

  • Tyler Hayes · 1 year ago
After reading some more of these now, how do you quantify (not qualify) gatejumping? Is there a certain point when you say, "Yup, that gate has been jumped now." Just because a company like meebo exists doesn't mean it's necessarily any better than standard IMing which is still used much more heavily. Or Rob Jacobs' examples above about schools being jumped by the world, which is hardly true considering people have learned from the world and school at the same time for thousands of years. Virtual classrooms have enabled more as well, but are they really "jumping" the gate per se?
  • chrisbrogan · 1 year ago
@Tyler - in my definition, I'd say it's a lot more clear than some of the examples given in the comments. Something old world versus something new.

Know what would be fun to do? The reverse? Where is the gatejumper the real world thing?
  • Ari Herzog · 1 year ago
How can you call Napster a jumper? That would be a keeper with iTunes the jumper.

And how can you compare the Yellow Pages with Craigslist? Craigslist is comparable to eBay, as Wikipedia is to Google. The jumper to the Yellow Pages is BigYellow.com (or any search engine, for that matter).
  • Juggling Frogs · 1 year ago
    @Ari Herzog:

Exactly! At one point, Napster was a gatejumper. Then iTunes jumped it.

Similarly, Ebay was a gatejumper when it stared, and now Craigslist jumped it.

The market is alive and evolving, not a simple arrow.

    Nate,

Nice suggestions but I'd change "Facebook event invites" to evite.com, which more people know about. I have many friends and colleagues, especially Baby Boomers, who use evite but aren't on Facebook.

Also, what is Betterthanthevan.com? What does that offer a band for fans and word of mouth marketing that MySpace or Facebook doesn't?

Quite a comparison there between Gatekeepers and Gatejumpers. Its those who are willing to push the envelope further that have truly jumped. Consider that Ames Dept. Stores and Wal-Mart started together. The ability to jump further has ensured Wal-Mart's survival to date.
