Chris Brogan: Forget Beyonce- Here Are the Stars

  • Justin Brooke · 8 months ago
Wow you're right they did seem like they were having a lot more fun in this video. Almost made me actually like the song this time. Could feel their passion and in my eyes its the passion that matters.
  • Freddy Gipson · 8 months ago
I'm not a fan of Beyonce either but they do have the choreography down pretty good.
  • Julie Williams · 8 months ago
These girls are amazing, they believed they could do it and they did. Good showcase for Talent Scouts

For the marketing connection -- it's the "how" part I get stuck on. In higher ed we're more service-oriented than product-based. When alumni have a great experience, the rave is created on their own. But when we want to try to help along the rave - how do we do that without it seeming contrived, lame, impersonal, etc.? It's hard to build excitement around our product/service/brand, especially without something like strong division 1 sports for fans to rally around.
  • Karmen Reed · 8 months ago
Put it in the hands of the fans and see the passion shine through! Bravo!
This totally reminds me of David Meerman Scott, the author of the World Wide Rave and one of his new marketing rules: Lose Control!

reminds me of the old aerobic exercise videos (think Jane Fonda) only with high heels on!

Those girls rocked it! Of course, they are from North Carolina - where the girls all know how to rock it.

One take? That's what's got me shaking my head. There are people out there doing podcasts that require dozens of takes and these women rocked the house in one clean shot.

    Love it.
  • Carolyn Wood · 8 months ago
I actually like the song and addition of leggings in the new version.

Let me guess, someone in your house thinks the girls in Beyonce's original look more like Barbie.
  • Neil · 8 months ago
Yep! Gotta admit I just tried this one and it took me three takes - must be the heels!

    Great post,
    Neil

This is something I never would have seen but for your post. It was great--I applauded at the end. Bully for these two stars...
  • Danny Brown · 8 months ago
Shouldn't that be "Make someone else's products yours"? Since they're taking another person's product and offering their spin on it?
  • Dulcita Love · 8 months ago
That was fun. Thanks Chris. I like the simplicity of their back-drop too. @dulcitalove

Chris, have you read this book?

Go girls from Carolina! They've got spirit. They've got spunk. The dancing duo put it together with varied moves. Great choreography. I bet they practiced hours and hours and hours to get it right. Bravo!

That was pretty good, its great when there is something out there for everyone to put themselves into and make an instant community out of it.That dance is hot stuff and theres tons of contests and videos on that one, i think i saw one on Ellen a while back too. It's actually a very exceptional talent that put it together. Music can do that like very few industries can.
  • Moise Levi · 8 months ago
That's the power of the web/blog/twitter ; it allows you to cut the middlemen and go straight to the public.
    Good dancers :)
  • Michael Bailey · 8 months ago
I didn't realize that Beyonce was releasing her songs as creative commons these days.

    Chris,
Great post. If enough marketers made stuff that people wanted to claim as their own, we'd have a lot more great stuff out there. It made me think of why giving the Queen of England an iPod was such a brilliant idea. (aside from its symbolism of American innovation that changes the world). Out of all the millions of iPods that are floating out there in the world, no two are the same. And each and every one of them is "my iPod" to somebody. That's a passion brand. And I'll bet you the queen likes hers!

Chris: While this is not your point at all - it's very timely for me because yesterday my house full of boys were searching all the copycat youtube videos for Beyonce's Single Ladies. One of my favorites though is this one - the "heavy" guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61ObmtD8LPE

The original skit on SNL with Justin Timberlake is one of the funniest, but they've taken it off of YouTube b/c of copyright reasons. This one gives parts though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFmwnrryIKI&...

I still have that house full of boys so I'm going to share it with them and hear what they have to say . . Thanks for the rather lighthearted post this am.

  • Susie Blackmon · 8 months ago
Yes, NC girls KNOW how to 'rock it.' I think I need to make plans for a YouTube hot blogger/Twitterlicious/Brogangroupies video.
  • SheltonO · 8 months ago
    Chris,
Is it "Make your products someone else’s" or "Make someone else’s products your own"?
  • frank · 8 months ago
Kinda like what Mac has done with their stuff (laptop, iPhone, iPod). There is a definite cult like movement of thousands who 'own' their Mac product.

Thanks for posting this, Chris. Loved the attitude, espec. in last 5 secs when they break character and strut off - as they DESERVE to do! Brava for their performance!
Yep, if I could get my clients to 'imitate/flatter' me like this, I'd be doing cartwheels! Thanks for the inspiration -- I'm setting this as a business goal!

I got addicted to this video, sharing it with my god daughters who love it. We looked on YouTube and cannot find the full length version - "just" the mashup of several performances in which they are included.

Please Chris - how can I find link to the full version?

don't you love it when you find passion? Those girls got it!
  • LisaNewton · 8 months ago
One take, yupp, but how much practice went into that one take? How much time? That's the real beauty. One take didn't happen overnight. It took practice and time. Oh, and don't forget, passion. For someone to spend so much time on practice, the passion has to be there.

    holy crap they killed it!
  • Pete Codella · 8 months ago
I've been a fan of this song and video for a few weeks. These girls do an amazing job in one take. But the first parody I saw of it was by The Dan Band and man, they really killed it. Plus they have the whole humor thing going for them. If you liked this video, you'll get a kick out of The Dan Band (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WQHcQ3ueYA).
  • Jen · 8 months ago
Totally rocked it! Made me want to get up and dance.

And Beyonce owes you. Because now there's this little slice of the world who has never heard that song before (like me - news radio junkie). Now I have it stuck in my head, downloaded to my iPod, and saved to my "Get Your @$$ Moving" playlist.

We do want to make our products someone else's. I love it when someone calls our restaurant "our place." I know I have a loyal customer. It's not just another chain, but the spot they love. That means they'll be back. It isn't just good for business; it refuels your passion.
