Chris Brogan: Business Tips for New Media Types

  • Sam Jackson · 3 years ago
Any techniques for maintaining all-important credibility in light of sponsorship from relevant businesses? Especially with support coming in from an organization that might be related to the niche you're covering, it seems like a very tricky task, even with full disclosure. I've had to turn down several generous offers because I didn't feel my readership would be comfortable with them, sadly.

Chris, great listing. Very applicable to those of us who are not in it to turn the ad dollar or make a business of it. Passion will ultimately need some satisfaction, no matter how you define it an these tips should help you be successful, period.

    Thanks!

All of the above makes sense to me, especially the part about exclusivity. I agree that will be the big buzz of 2007, as far as I can tell, when the smart companies will look to lock up properties for the long haul (3-5 years). If it's in your best interest to sign with one of them, then do so, but remember: we all entered this space for the autonomy, and there's a trade-off between control and income.

Otherwise, we all would have kept trying to break into television or film 24/7.

Don't ever assume that your subscriber base is large enough to start its own word-of-mouth machine. You're never too big to keep handing out business cards or showing your content to new people.
