Though it's a loose parallel, I've been explaining to friends who aren't "there" yet that the shifts happening in/with Web 2.0 is like the difference between pre- and post-Women's suffrage. The point being, I'm sure there were a whole bunch of politicians pre-Women's suffrage who were great before women could vote, but couldn't make the shift once the voter pool increased by 100%.
