Chris Brogan: Becoming chrisbrogan

Since I've discovered you, Chris, you've always stood out as a "community organizer and collaborator" in my eyes.

To answer your question, I hope the brand I'm trying to develop for myself is consistent. I like consistency, but from the center console it's hard to tell how I come across.

While I simply set out to project a professional appearance for myself as an IT guy, I've gotten noticed most on personal branding. Which is awkward for me because I'm an old fashioned computer nerd - not an abstract-thought marketing type.

Your brand represents new thought on how to network and behave online. I'm consistently impressed with your ability to connect with people and communicate in a positive manner all the time.

ha ha! i hear ya on the chrisbrogan thing. i'm so totally "anjibee" now. many people type my name that way, as if it were one word. i never set out to be a brand, i'm just the type of person that likes to use their name online, instead of a made up screen name. eventually the brand grew of it's own accord and now i embrace it.

What I find interesting here is that I was coming to this over the last year. In the UK its feels quite .. well frankly American .. to even define the concept of "Branding" the you, the id and the ego. Dave Murphys introduction to your Brand was eye opening from a "Hey this isnt a crazy mad idea" perspective.

Currently I am working on two aspects of the "Brand" whilst I focus on how to itegrate into the market I am seeking to get involved in. The first aspect is Wider and broader scope of Blogging and Social Network involvement. The second aspect is to build a Video / Audio podcast brand with the help of others.

Robert Scoble is right about the "Out There" investment in availability and the Balance seems to be between being in peoples minds or in their faces.

As for the Brand of chrisbrogan your definitely in Mind not face, if that makes sense.

Nice post. Can't get this message out there enough.

Mitch Joel talks about personal branding a lot. His bottom line is that EVERYONE has a personal brand. Basically, its what other people perceive you to be. There are people who recognize this and choose to take control of it, and there are people don't.

I would think that unless you are trying to brand yourself as someone you AREN'T, then the biggest change would simply be that fact that you are AWARE of your personal brand, where before you might not have been.

Ha. I just thought of a great story (at least, I hope its great).

I wear deodorant. Most of us do. I hope. Anyway, one day my wife bought me a new brand, and it was scented. The scent was strong enough that I was aware of it. It wasn't bad, just different. Nothing had changed, really, and probably no one else noticed but me. My wife sure didn't. But the day before, I was completely unaware that I was wearing deodorant, and the next I was reminded repeatedly, and it caught me off guard each time. Eventually, though, that awareness dropped to the background, too. It just became part of (hmmm, do I dare go there?) part of my personal brand, I suppose. ;)

OK. I wouldn't be surprised if I get a letter asking me to NEVER comment again.

Just wanted to take time to say that this was a great post. Not for the insight into your head, but for the thoughts that others can take away.

I love this post- because it goes to the heart of everything. If you are authentically yourself, for good, for bad, for whatever- you don't have to try on the metaphorical clothes of other people or brands. You are authentically yourself and your own brand. Brands you choose to wear or use are associated brands, so to speak. And moreover, you never have to worry about being anyone else other than yourself. And that is very hard for some people- maintaining different public/private/online/offline personas.

I think I just found my Halloween costume for this year.
