Even in our personal lives, we organize socially around ideas, relationships and interests. At work, the common goal is business value, and there needs to be a way for people to find the conversations and contribute that is connected somehow to that value.

I hope you read the attached blog and leave comments as you see fit.

Re: A Simple Presence Framework

This is a great metaphor

Re: A Simple Presence Framework

Good system you've got in place. Being mindful of your ultimate goal and using social media channels to drive toward that goal is huge and one would think obvious, but we still work with clients who fear the loss of control that SM represents (faulty logic, I know, since control is long gone). As a result, some are creating their SM presence as an entity almost entirely separate from their home base - or website. Any tips on breaking through and emphasizing just how faulty that logic is?

Re: A Simple Presence Framework

This is a great metaphor for how to organize your time and networking. Just a suggestion to non-profits, sustainable (or green) companies as well as social activists: go to wiserearth.org for more networking opportunities! It also encouraged me to think about the definition, context, and use cases for "outposts" as Mr. Brogan describes them.

There are three distinctly other classes of "outposts" that the "Simple Presence Framework" should be inclusive of:
1) the enthusiast online communities and forums (not enterprise-owned) where you, as either a personal or enterprise brand, own some level of authority for the value that you provide to one or more of the tribes in that online community.
2) the enthusiast blogs of well-regarded tribal members in #1.
3) micro-blog posts of tribal members found in #1.

This is what Paul Mabray (CSO, VinTank) might call "social-colonization in the virtual kiosks", cultivating a series of opportunities to fertilize nascent relationships through the display of adequate authority (or promise of value to-be-delivered) when targeted potential "Home Base" visitors can benefit from the deeper experience and richer engagement that you deliver on your "Home Base". See and hear my short "WOM-buzz" clip of Paul Mabray explaining his "virtual kiosk in the mall" model : http://bit.ly/bd2pJw

Re: A Simple Presence Framework

Very practical advice for getting started. Except of course, when the passports, outposts and home base are oblivious to what people are searching for.

Find out what people are searching for relevant to your goals and flavor (NOT stuff) your digital content as such. Make it easier for those that are not already socially connected to you, to find your outposts, passports and home base via search. You you may very well amplify the effect of the sage advice Chris gives about building a presence.

Re: A Simple Presence Framework

Chris, great stuff.
