This is a very useful list. Thanks Chris. Some of you might also find useful: http://technorati.com/

A new startup that's a video platform that you might find interesting is Qik, a video platform site that you use to upload video from your phone straight to Qik. Novel, and unprecedented in it's easy-to-use manner and social feature.
  • Bernie Goldbach · 1 year ago
I'm with genieyclo and could not imagine the world before Qik. I run it as my storylining technology, capturing video and audio moments that my creative multimedia students later consult when crafting two minute video clips of their own. Qik upstreams from my Nokia phone, in private or public streams, interactive when they're being made.

Great list! MT is free, btw.
  • Joe | A New Band A Day.com · 1 year ago
I thought this list would be pretty superfluous, as most of the things listed are pretty well-known, but I found some great new services here, thanks very much!
  • kidoimages · 1 year ago
You might want to include http://12seconds.tv/
Even more succinct communication. You have 12 seconds of video.

  • Neal Jansons · 1 year ago
I use most of these already, but Upcoming.org was a great find, Chris, thanks a lot. I will hit a lot more events now.
  • steve Garfield · 1 year ago
I like bloglines for feed reading.

Just used Pandora on my iPhone 1.0 yesterday and it works great on both WiFi and the EDGE network. IT also stops playing music when the phone rings.

Plaxo seems to be missing from your list....

    Awesome list Chris.
Here are a few additional tools to consider. I have an account with most of them, but am by no means a power user or a fan of all of them.

Plaxo - social network / address book
Jott - similar to Utterz, post voice to your social media properties
Social | Median - similar to FriendFeed
Merchant Circle - local biz referral and networking
    Naymz - name reputation community
Ryze - processional network, strong in Europe
Ecademy - processional network, strong in Europe
Spokeo - Searches for info about you all over the web (spooky)
MeetUp - local events and networking
  • thatwomancdv · 1 year ago
Hi Chris, although new to the mix, let's add http://www.sohobiztube.com, Blogtalk radio, and seesmic. Good business blog would also be smallbiztrends.com

The list is great, I plan to visit most and add some tools to my arsenal.
  • Kyle Studstill · 1 year ago
The music discovery site/game www.thesixtyone.com is starting to take off as a platform for underground and upcoming artists. I'm starting to see more recognized artists like MIA, We Are Scientists, Ted Leo/Pharmacists show up and become quickly popular in the 61 system, bringing more credibility to the site.
  • Marc A. Pitman · 1 year ago
I give you a point. (At least 5 sites I hadn't heard of.)

Not sure if I'll thank you for bringing them to my attention... ;)
  • Webconomist · 1 year ago
Great list, I'd add Ping.fm for Microblogging broadcast.

This guy, Bob Stumpel has put together an impressive Web 2.0 list of services (over 300 blog apps):

Six Apart offers a free personal license of Movable Type for non-commercial web logs; there's also an open source version that can be used however you wish: http://www.movabletype.org/opensource/.
  • monitter · 1 year ago
How about Monitter (http://monitter.com) - it lets you view 3 real-time streams of tweets from twitter.

You just type in 3 keywords, and it feeds the tweets... check it out.. and let me know what you think at: @monitter on twitter.. :)
  • marshal sandler · 1 year ago
You might add- Mac Journal and- Win Journal Paid software by Mariner Software:)
  • jackstowe · 1 year ago
Very useful list. Most of them are useful but not all of them I am a member. Hmmmn, I will...
  • Gary S. Walter · 1 year ago
I am a registered user of about 80% of these items. But since the advent of Ping.Fm, some of them have become redundant. Ping lets me cross post to many of my favorite social messaging/microblogging sites.

Plurk, Pownce, Jaiku, and some others just don't have the appeal of identica and Twitter.

Then of course, FriendFeed and Strands do a great job of collecting "stuff" from my friends.
  • Eric Miltsch · 1 year ago
    Three other simple sites:

    www.Popego.com
    www.Blipper.com
    www.Profilactic.com

    Great list Chris!
  • Paul Stallard · 1 year ago
Thanks for the compilation Chris which I found via danleach.co.uk Very useful.
  • Alphonse Ha · 1 year ago
No Doodgeball? I guess it isn't "cool" anymore. (I'm not being sarcastic). I'm not from the States so I don't have access to Dodgeball (Unfortunately) I don't know how well it is running right now.

For Music I love sadsteve but I don't know if that would figure on your list.
  • Ryan Graves · 1 year ago
How do you use all of these tool?

  • Alan Houser · 1 year ago
    Great list. I'd say I'm about 60%.
  • Beth Bates · 1 year ago
This is a very helpful list, Chris. Here are a few that I always throw out there for specialty areas and non-profits:

Eons.com (http://www.eons.com) - social community for baby boomers (I've found that the question "How do we reach out to 60+ crowd?" comes up a lot.)

Gather.com (http://www.gather.com) - social community for the intellectual set.

Changents.com (http://www.changents.com) - connecting agents of change with backers.

    Change.org (http://www.change.org) - social community for non-profits.

    Idealist.org (http://www.idealist.org) - community and resources for non-profits.
  • Sterre · 7 months ago
Beth! You are a great profesional on social media. I have read some of your blogs on your own personal site. I would like to ask you to take a look @ www.pifworld.com.

Social Media can also be very valuable for charitable organisations/causes. Pifworld.com is an online platform that brings together people and development projects from all over the world. Their point is to build up a loyal community around projects and create a positive change worldwide. The Social Media aspect makes is possible to keep the crowd updated about the projects and keep them involved. They can be the witness of the change they achieve.

I you have any ideas or suggestion, feel free to contact me.

    Chris,

Excellent and most helpful post! Some additions from my side:

    Feed management:

    - Feedly.com: great feedreader; posts shown are based on the interest of your friends on other Social Media sites such as Twitter and FriendFeed. This results in very targetted reading.

    - Toluu.com : matches your feeds with those of others; and suggests other feeds that might be interesting for you.

    Regards,

    Jeroen

  • xoost.com · 1 year ago
Hi Chris, thanks for this aggregation, useful. But, what about adding an emerging category named Social Search? Xoost would fit into it. cheers, Felix

I love Asaph (http://www.phoboslab.org/projects/asaph). Essentially let's you run a simple tumblog style blog on your own server. http://internetjogging.com/things is where mine lives, I customized a bit and love having a visual archive of favourite things on the web.
  • dhonut · 1 year ago
wonder why Friendster is not on the list of social networking site..in my country its very famous, though.
  • Emily Odza · 1 year ago
Should there be an online Calendar or Social Calendar category? I love www.30boxes.net. As Felix suggested, also need the category of social search, or alternatively the newish term: social discovery (see BiblioCommons and the new library catalog/social discovery tool they are rolling out now--Oakville Public Library beta). I agree Plaxo/Pulse should be on here, as a way of keeping your virtual contact list and networking at the same time. Anyone who uses libraries should be aware of LibraryThing and Library Elf. Any suggestions on what category to place these in?

For a different kind of Social Network, a lot more grown up, try http://www.FindLikeMinds.com
  • frederic sidler · 1 year ago
You cannot compete with services like Twitter that in place for so long and so popular. So you need to take it into account and integrate in your strategy. Plus if you want to make a microblogging service, you need (IMHO) to rely on SMS and as you cannot afford SMS out, you need to use such services (Twitter, Jaiku, etc) for that.

That is why we (mixin.com) consider these services (Twitter, Jaiku, Plurk, etc.) as new communication channels for our social agenda. When you found something to do or would like to do something you need to discuss, suggest, and decide where and when. So you need to send it to your friends that are not always on the same social network or are not on any social network at all (yes it is possible ;-)
  • Linde · 1 year ago
Like the list...but in the social networks category you should add myheritage.com; a social network for families..
what facebook is for friends, linkedin for business, myheritage if for families.
  • saucyshits · 1 year ago
    How about http://wallbrawl.com for music?
  • Vtoolbox · 1 year ago
While these new social tools are great, don't forget the older forum-based sites. Often these are great for users, though certainly more difficult to spam/hijack/penetrate. See for example Two Peas in a Bucket - massive traffic, active user base, but if you aren't into scrap-booking they will chase you out like Pooh in a beehive. Also, there is are growing communities of interest around open source apps in Google Code.

Thanks for putting all this great stuff in one easy place that we can keep referring back to. Where does Max Levchin's Slide play a role in all of this? I see its not on your list.
    Kind regards
    Kevin
  • Molly · 11 months ago
Thanks for all the sites, thoughI'd add a word of caution. I'm over my head on keeping track of what I've signed up for, what it does, how it can help me, etc.... so I've had to back off most of the sites, ignoring them while I familiarize myself with a select few.
Perhaps bookmarking your article, including some fascinating additions in the comments, signing up for a few of the sites, play with them for awhile until you're comfortable with what they do, then continue down the list a few sites at a time.
    Molly
  • Marge · 8 months ago
Good list, kept me for a little while
  • Sterre · 7 months ago
Thanks for the list. Chris, you however forgot one important site: www.pifworld.com. The site is launched only fours weeks ago, so I forgive you ;-)

Social Media can also be very valuable for charitable organisations/causes. www.Pifworld.com is an online platform that brings together people and development projects from all over the world. Their point is to build up a loyal community around projects and create a positive change worldwide. The Social Media aspect makes is possible to keep the crowd updated about the projects and keep them involved. They can be the witness of the change they achieve.

Take a look, and who knows, maybe next year we will see pifworld in your list next year!
